Welcome to Aldersgate United Methodist Church!

We are thrilled that you are visiting our website and are eager for you to visit our church.  The Aldersgate family welcomes you to attend our worship services, special programs, musicals and opportunities for Christian fellowship and growth.  Our events have been developed for all ages, interests and stages of spiritual development.  When you are at Aldersgate, you’ll find yourself surrounded by people eager to join you sharing God’s love and grace.

In this visitor’s section of our website, we’ve included some general information about our church, our faith, our membership and our ministries.  You will also find information that will help you to feel at-home on your first visit to our church.  We hope that by reviewing this information, meeting our membership and worshiping God with us, you will gain an appreciation for the quality and diversity of our spiritual, fellowship and outreach programs.  When you are ready, we also welcome you to make Aldersgate your church home.

Aldersgate is located in Alexandria, Virginia between Olde Towne and the Historic Mt. Vernon Mansion.  Traveling South on the George Washington Memorial Parkway from Olde Towne, turn right at Collingwood Road.  We are located at the intersection of Collingwood Road and Ft. Hunt Road (at the first stoplight).  Ample parking is available in the rear of the building.  There are entries to the parking lot on both Ft. Hunt Road and Collingwood Road.

Our Weekend Worship Services

Aldersgate has a Saturday evening service and three worship services on Sunday mornings.  The services are at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 8:30, 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. on Sunday.  All are welcome at each service.  Our parking lots do get busy on Sunday mornings – please plan on arriving approximately 15 minutes early to allow yourself adequate time to park and get settled in the sanctuary.

You will find that some of our members choose to wear their best “church clothes” to worship; others choose to dress more casually for worship services.  Usually services in the hot summer months tend to be the most casual.  We welcome you to come to Aldersgate dressed in what makes you feel most ready to worship and praise God.

Educational Activities for Children, Youth and Adults on Sunday Mornings

Aldersgate offers a Children’s Worship program for children ages 3 years old through 2nd grade during the 8:30 and 11:15 Sunday services.

Sunday School classes are available on Sundays for children, youths and adults aged 3 and up.  Most of the classes for children are at 9:45. Youth and adult classes are offered at a variety of times and cover a variety of topics.  Periodically the church also sponsors churchwide studies; typically these studies meet in smaller discussion groups. You and your children are encouraged and welcome to join any of the classes.

Becoming a Member at Aldersgate

Anyone who has been baptized in a Christian church can join Aldersgate by one of these methods:

1.  Confession of Faith –

This is the initial entrance into membership of the church. One confesses faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

2.  Reaffirmation of Faith –

This is one’s renewing of the initial Confession of Faith, after a period of inactivity or not being on a church membership roll.

3.  Transfer of Membership –

May be from another United Methodist Church or a Christian church of any denomination.

Here’s what your commitment means to us and to you.

The Aldersgate Family is committed to invite people to Christ, shape believers, and glorify God in the process. Every member recommits annually to be actively involved in the life of the church with their:

Prayers for the church and its ministries

Presence at worship services, Bible study and ministry activities

Gifts of financial support as a faith investment in God’s work

Service to His kingdom by volunteering to serve in one or more ministry areas

To help you get started, you are invited to have coffee with the pastors so you can get to know more about Aldersgate and the United Methodist Church. These coffees are generally in the evening on the first Wednesday of the month. Please contact the church office if you want to attend and let us know if you will need childcare.

New members commit to attending a new member orientation session, where they will learn about church ministries and will make this initial commitment of Prayers, Presence, Gifts and Service for the remainder of the year.

What Does it Mean to be a Methodist?

The official motto of the United Methodist Church is “Open Hearts.  Open Minds.  Open Doors.”  Methodism dates back to the 1700s;  John Wesley was instrumental in the foundation of the earliest United Methodist churches.  To learn more, please visit www.umc.org.
