Fall Adult Evening and Weekday Study Opportunities

Sunday Evenings

Disciple I: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study

Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study is a foundational Bible Study program in the United Methodist Church.  The Study gives equal time to both the Old and New Testament, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as the revelation of God.  DISCIPLE aims at transformation, not just information, and calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Scripture, to put themselves under the power of God’s Word, and to be changed by God’s Word.  This study will give you the opportunity to read the entire Bible and requires substantial reading in most weeks.  During the course of thirty-five lessons, we’ll move through the biblical stories of Creation to the New Jerusalem. Class time will include small group discussion and viewing of a DVD lecture by biblical scholars.

Facilitators: Mike Crane & Jerry Vernon. — Room 212  Time: 6:30 - 9 p.m. beginning September 9

Tuesday Evenings

The Book of Revelation

Is it an elaborate metaphor, or does it predict the future destruction of God’s creation? Who will be left behind? How will Christ judge us?  The Book of Revelation, with its vivid imagery and dense symbols, is a difficult and challenging book. While Revelation has captured the popular imagination, it is little understood and seldom read in most Christian congregations. This Fall, as Aldersgate journeys through Revelation during the stewardship season, Rev. Jason Micheli will offer a 7 session course to help you better understand Revelation’s role in the history of the Church and its message for Christians today.

Facilitator: Rev. Jason Micheli — Room 104 (Music Room)  Time: 7:30 - 9 p.m. beginning September 11

Disciple II: Into the Word – Into the World

This thirty-two week study selects specific portions of Scripture and goes deeper into them.  Equal attention is given to Old and New Testaments with concentration on four books:  Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts.  Participants will read familiar passages, seeing them in fresh ways and expecting God to speak through them. This study proclaims the transforming power of Scripture while teaching Bible study skills that take participants deeper into the Scripture.  Participants are encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines arising out of Scripture for the purpose of changing habits and transforming lives.  The study also emphasizes the rhythm of coming to God and going

for God, of being in the Word and in the world individually and corporately.  Into the Word - Into the World

approaches all experiences of life as opportunities for faithful witness and service.

Facilitators: Barbara Yancey & Ann Vernon — Room 202  time 6:30 - 9 p.m. beginning September 12

Thursday Evenings

Jesus In The Gospels

Jesus in the Gospels invites believers to look at Jesus in each of the four Gospels and ask the question, "Who is the Jesus that you see?" This study will deepen discipleship through better understanding of the biblical texts and their message. Lessons 1-22 concentrate on Matthew, Mark, and Luke with some related passages from John. Lessons 23-30 concentrate on the Gospel of John with supporting passages from other parts of the New and Old Testament. In the course of the thirty weeks, participants will read the four Gospels and considerable amounts of Scripture from other parts of the Bible.
