What is “Fair Trade” Coffee?

  • Fair Trade coffee tastes great, at a decent price and helps support a good cause!  Fair Trade coffee is served here at Aldersgate between services each Sunday; and it is sold here for brewing at home, with all proceeds going to support the Aldersgate Mission Ministry.
  • “Fair trade” means an equitable and fair partnership between consumers in North America and producers in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.  Fair Trade certified coffee is the first product introduced into the United States with an independently monitored system to ensure it was produced under fair labor conditions./files/Risk-Taking Mission Service/bag of coffee.jpg
  • As with many other industries in the developing world, the history of coffee growing has often been one of exploitation, unfair practices, low wages, poverty and dependence.  The “Fair Trade” movement provides an alternative for both consumers in North America and for individual coffee growers around the world.  Many of these growers live in Guatemala, one of our mission sites.
  • The “Fair Trade” movement has helped organize small independent coffee growers into cooperatives and create a viable, consistent and long-term market for their product.  It guarantees that growers get a fair price for their harvest in order to achieve a decent living wage (a minimum payment of $1.26 per pound regardless of the volatile market).
  • These fair payments are invested in health care, education, environmental stewardship and economic independence.  The movement also provides much needed credit at fair prices and  develops long-term business relationships to ensure that economic independence is sustainable

What did the Aldersgate Mission Ministry actually accomplish in 2009?

With your help last year, Aldersgate:

SENT  65 congregation members to provide hands-on service support for indigenous Mayan women and families in Guatemala.

BUILT  50 wood stoves with chimneys to provide cheaper, cleaner, safer heating and cooking for Mayan families.  Smoke from open-pit indoor fires is a leading cause of chronic respiratory disease – the number one health problem shortening the lives of Mayan women in Guatemala.

PROVIDED  support for 6 Missionaries and Pastors in Cambodia, along with more than 4 tons of rice to feed Cambodian children and families in the off-season.

PROVIDED  two vegetables farms, 12 cows and 1 diesel pump for irrigation during the dry season in CambodiaPLUS water filters to ensure clean water for 70 families in Cambodia.
