Discussion will be based on reading the book and biblical references, and responding to movie clips and DVD presentation by author. Sunday Morning at 9:45

Great Figures of the New Testament- Room 212

Leader- Bill Cleveland

The Searchers Class will be starting a 24 week series called Great Figures of the New Testament, a series of lectures by Amy-Jill Levine. Stories of Jesus and the people surrounding him took shape in a combination of historical memory, pastoral concern, and aesthetic taste.  What one Gospel chose to highlight, another ignores; what one canonical text mentions in passing, later tradition substantially develops.  This study takes a close look at specific characters:  who they are, what they do, and how they have been assessed across the centuries by historians, artists, theologians, and worshipers in the pews.

Troublesome Bible Passages- Room 208

Leader- Ken Latta

The Potpourri Class will be studying Troublesome Bible Passages by Randy Cross. Bible students sometimes run across troublesome passages that are difficult to understand and put into practice, but are significant to Christian growth and discipleship. This study tackles Scriptures not normally studied from a discipleship viewpoint. This study book looks at 8 Old Testament and 15 New Testament scripture passages. Some of the lesson titles are: The Ten Commandments, Why Do Innocents Suffer?, Forgiveness, The Word Made Flesh, Speaking in Tongues and more.

A People’s History of Christianity- Room 209

Leader- Jay Steadman

The Basic Class will be following the fall sermon series by studying Diana Butler Bass’ new book, A People's History of Christianity: The Other Side of the Story. The class will look at the history of the Grassroots Movements in Christianity that Preserved Jesus’ Message of Social Justice for 2,000 Years and Their Impact on the Church Today. In the same spirit as Howard Zinn's groundbreaking work The People's History of the United States, Diana Butler Bass reveals the under-reported movements, personalities, and spiritual practices that continue to inform and ignite contemporary Christian worship, activism, and social justice reforms in the name of Jesus.

Journey through the Bible- Room 210

Leader- Steve Rezendes

This class will kick-off by studying, verse-by-verse, the Book of Exodus. If you’re interested in an in-depth bible study, then this is the class for you. The Book of Exodus is quite possibly the most important scripture in the Old Testament and the most critical book for understanding the Gospel stories.

Christian Family Life Class – Room 132

Leader – Mary Porter

This class will be offering a new 8-week study, THE PASSIONATE LIFE FOR PARENTS beginning October 24. This class will revisit the 2006 church-wide study, A Passionate Life, through the lens of parents. The focus is to provide practical and significant guidelines for living a Christian family life and building a relationship with God and your family that is abundant, intentional and passionate. The tools provided in this study are designed to help us recall the life Jesus modeled for us and how we can activate his example in our daily lives – to live as God intended and to be an instrument of his influence. The Christian Family Life class has been an Aldersgate fixture for over 15 years and continually welcomes new members. To sign up, contact Mary Porter at teamporter@verizon.net or 703-765-6129.
