< Back Pastor Sherry Hietpas Associate Pastor Email: shietpas@aldersgate.net Phone: (703) 765-6555 x601 Pastor Sherry Hietpas is a graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, with a Master of Divinity and is currently a Provisional Elder in the Virginia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She received her call to vocational ministry in 2017 while serving as the Director of Family Ministries at First United Methodist Church in Pacific Grove, CA. She has previously served Andrew Chapel UMC in Vienna, VA, as their Associate Pastor. Sherry has a passion for building community as an expression of faith in Jesus Christ and believes many relationships are formed around a table, usually over good food and discussion. She finds that relationship building leads to a strong sense of belonging, which can spur personal and communal transformation. Sherry has also developed a passion for digital ministry, which was cultivated while living overseas. Sherry is married to an active-duty Marine and is a mother to three daughters. She is excited to be part of the incredible ministries of Aldersgate UMC, as they serve the community of Alexandria.

- 2024 Stewardship Campaign | Aldersgate UMC
Courageously living and sharing God's unconditional love every day, with everyone, everywhere. GIVE TO ALDERSGATE UMC Do All the Good You Can Stewardship Campaign 2024 "They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share." 1 Timothy 6:18 (NRSV) Our theme for this year's Stewardship Campaign 2024 is based on one of John Wesley's guiding principles to "Do All the Good You Can". This message is reinforced in scripture where, in 1 Timothy 6:18, Paul asks Timothy to instruct the people of Ephesus to "do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share". In the spirit of "do all the good you can", we need to use this Stewardship season to prayerfully renew our commitment to the Aldersgate mission of "courageously living God's unconditional love". Stewardship is not just about the finances we commit to the church. It is also about using our God-given gifts to serve the church and others. As we continue our Stewardship theme of, "Do All the Good You Can" we invite you to make a commitment of your time and talents for 2024. Consider making a new commitment this year, and please make sure to renew your commitment in an area you wish to continue using your gifts. These Time and Talent cards are vital for the health and growth of the church as we seek to do all the good that we can in our church and community. Drop off your Time and Talent card in the offering plate on Sunday morning, bring it to the church office, or email it to office@aldersgate.net by Sunday, January 21st. Time & Talent Card Time & Talent Video Campaign Testimonial Videos Time & Talent Testimonial Videos Watch our video highlighting the ministries of Aldersgate UMC Doing All the Good We Can Prayer Calendar As we enter 2024, we take the time to consider where we have been this past year, to express gratitude in the present, and to celebrate in the hope for the future. We invite you to prayerfully consider making a commitment to our 2024 Stewardship Campaign by providing the financial resources needed to support the facilities, staff, missions, wellness classes, children and youth ministries, music ministries, and more. Please know that all gifts of all amounts matter. We look forward with great anticipation to the tomorrows that begin today as we strive to do all the good that we can. Campaign Financial Pledge Form Campaign Progress 187 Pledges Received as of March 27th, 2024 Goal: $950,000 $948,299 Thank you for your contribution and commitment to Aldersgate UMC! Our Operating Budget The reason for making a pledged commitment is to support the annual expenses for the operating budget for the church. The operating budget is the cost of all the expenses of the church to include programs, missions, apportionments, salaries, overhead, etc. The total operating budget for 2024 is projected to be $1.5 million. We rely on pledged commitments, non-pledge donations, and other revenue to meet these expenses. Our goal is to receive pledged commitments for a total of $950,000. Note on Mission Funding in the Operating Budget The 5% for mission expenses does not include support from the UMM and UWF support of missions. Apportionments also support missions, and there are restricted funds designated for missions. Many members of the church support missions directly. You are asked each fall to make a commitment through the "Stewardship Campaign" for the upcoming year so that we can appropriately plan which missions we will be able to support, events we can plan to have, repairs we can expect to be able to make, etc. The amount you give is a personal matter. When deciding on how much to give, remember that scripture indicates that tithing is the standard and that giving one-tenth of our income to the church is the norm or a goal to attain.

- Aldersgate UMC | Mondloch House
Help provide fresh fruits and vegetables to our neighbors in need through the Mondloch House Program. MISSION INFORMATION < Previous Back to Local Missions Next > Mondloch House Volunteers are needed to purchase and deliver fresh produce for the local homeless shelters and transitional housing tenants through the Mondloch House program. CLICK HERE to sign up to volunteer. "Mondloch House" is the name of Aldersgate UMC's longstanding program that provides fresh fruits and vegetables each week to area shelters and to supportive housing operated in Alexandra by New Hope Housing . New Hope Housing is a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing and a gateway to a better life for homeless families and invididuals in our community. Mondloch House 1 on Lockheed Boulevard and the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter on Route One provide both short-and long-term housing to homeless individuals, while Mondloch Place provides them with transitional housing. In addition, New Hope Housing runs a number of supportive housing programs to help otherwise homeless families find and maintain subsidized housing. New Hope Housing offers families and individuals more than just food and shelter. It also helps them to develop the life skills needed for successful independent living by offering counseling, teaching employment skills, providing health services, and facilitating transportation assistance. New Hope Housing also operates an employment resources center and provides educational enrichment and recreational activities for children and their parents. For many years now, Aldersgate volunteers have supported the important work of New Hope Housing by providing fresh fruits and vegetables on a weekly basis to ensure that the individuals residing at the Mondloch House and Eleanor Kennedy Shelters have healthy and nutritious food to eat. The program also adds our fresh produce to grocery packages given to the families in subsidized and supportive housing. The time and financial commitment for volunteers is minimal, but the reward is great. How Can You Help? CLICK HERE to sign up to volunteer for a week (or more) this year. Volunteers pick a week of their own choosing to shop for and deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to our central drop off point at Mondloch House 1 (3510 Lockheed Boulevard). Volunteers are contacted early in the week with a list of the produce that is needed. Volunteers are asked to commit to spending at least $50 to purchase to the requested items at a store of their own choosing (and sometimes right from their own gardens!) and deliver them to the Mondloch House 1 shelter during daytime hours that week or weekend. - Shepherd Hall Mortgage Debt Reduction | Aldersgate UMC
Courageously living and sharing God's unconditional love every day, with everyone, everywhere. GIVE TO ALDERSGATE UMC Shepherd Hall 2023-2026 Campaign Repayment of Debt for Construction of Shepherd Hall "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." Psalm 23:1 The Shepherd Hall project included building Shepherd Hall; renovating existing classrooms; installation of new and higher capacity boilers and air conditioning for the entire church complex; and environmental site requirements, including the parking lot expansion and the installation of drainage sand filler. Total costs were approximately $4.6 million. The need for Shepherd Hall came because of an increase in the number of families in the community. Space was needed for the growing Sunday School attendance and the expansion of the Aldersgate Day School. The primary purpose was to support Christian education. Another use for the new building was much-needed storage. At that time, the church was overflowing with materials and equipment to support church activities. The third floor of Shepherd Hall was designed to provide sufficient storage. Shepherd Hall Testimonial Videos Campaign Commitments Campaign Information Packet FAQs Campaign Presentation Thank you for your contribution and commitment to Aldersgate UMC! The map of the church (above) shows the first two floors of Shepherd Hall at the bottom, inside the red box. The third floor, which is not shown, is used for storage. Shepherd Hall is a three-story addition to the church building that includes approximately 15,000 square feet of meeting and storage space. The addition is about 30% of the overall church building's space. Shepherd Hall includes the church library, where books on a variety of topics are available and where meetings of many church and community groups are held, Sunday School classes for children, youth, and adults, along with storage for the church, Aldersgate Day School, and the Aldersgate Church Community Theater. Our church community has been very generous and has given through several campaigns to support Shepherd Hall. As of October 21, 2025, the remaining debt is $783,476.31. *Updated October 2025* History of Giving Progress Report Current Status History of Giving Towards Shepherd Hall From 2010-2016, a total of $1,395,885.86 was given toward the Shepherd Hall project. The most recent campaigns (Building Lives Campaign in 2016-2019 - $857,829.94 and Growing Lives for the Future Campaign in 2023-2026 - $525,079.48) have brought in $1,156,561. In addition to this, $61,909 was contributed in "Mortgage May" in May 2022 against a goal of $10,000. The total paid from these campaigns of $2,775,795 reflects a significant amount of interest that has been paid over the lifetime of the loan. During that time, the principal has been reduced by a far smaller amount. We still have a long way to go.
- Strategic Priorities | Aldersgate UMC
Courageously living and sharing God's unconditional love every day, with everyone, everywhere. STRATEGIC PRIORITIES ONWARD 2030 - AUMC's Strategic Plan Aldersgate UMC will live out our mission of courageously living God's unconditional love, serving others, and making disciples by: Engaging people for Christ. Connecting people with Christ through our ministries and programs. Equipping people to be disciples of Christ. Sending people out as disciples to engage others. Within this structure, we will pursue strategies in line with the following principles: FINANCES PURSUE FINANCIAL SOLVENCY FOR THE CHURCH THROUGH DEBT REDUCTION MEASURES AND NEW EFFORTS TO GROW REVENUE. God has blessed AUMC with an abundance of resources. To be good stewards of those resources, promote responsible financial practices, and ensure continued progress as a church, AUMC will seek to achieve a balanced budget by 2030. This goal will be achieved through prayerful and deliberate consideration of eliminating current debts and increasing revenue in a responsible way. Additionally, AUMC will operate in a transparent manner which ensures all church stakeholders are fully aware of current and future financial equities. PARTNERSHIPS BUILD NEW PARTNERSHIPS AND STRENGTHEN CURRENT PARTNERSHIPS IN THE LOCAL, STATE, REGIONAL, AND GLOBAL COMMUNITY. Aldersgate’s diverse network of partnerships has spread blessings in the community, state, nation, and world. This is an important part of the church’s identity and must be a central aspect of decision-making moving forward. Adding, maintaining, expanding, and, when necessary, curtailing partnerships will enable AUMC to continue courageously living God’s unconditional love. When adding or expanding partnerships, the church must prayerfully consider the share of additional time and resources required in relation to its obligations to the congregation. DAY SCHOOL WE WILL CONTINUE TO DEEPEN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR DAY SCHOOL SO THAT IT BRINGS MULTI-GENERATIONAL GROWTH TO OUR CONGREGATION. The Day School is an excellent source of potential new congregants at Aldersgate. As a mission of AUMC, the Day School is a place of growth, love, caring, and kindness in the community. We want to help develop our Day School families on their spiritual journey. We will offer quality Christian family-based programs they can relate to, ultimately bringing more families to Christ and growing our congregation. MODERNIZATION MODERNIZE THE CHURCH TO EXPAND ALDERSGATE’S PRESENCE, COMMUNICATION, AND REACH. AUMC must keep pace with its future digital and physical needs to ensure a professional, pleasant, safe, and welcoming presence. This effort will require integration among the church’s ministries and continual assessment of how no-cost and low-cost efforts can bring outsize benefits to the church. Selective larger-scale investments are also possible, so long as they conform to the church’s top priorities of stewardship and financial solvency.

- Aldersgate UMC | Our Pastors & Staff | Pastor Bill John
< Back Pastor Bill John Senior Pastor Email: bjohn@aldersgate.net Phone: (703) 765-6555 x602 Pastor Bill John has been an elder in the United Methodist Church for 25 years and has served three appointments. He has been privileged to serve God alongside congregations in Rockingham, Mathews, and New Kent counties. Bill will join Aldersgate from Providence UMC, where he has been ministering since 2014. Bill’s greatest joy in ministry is witnessing the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in people’s lives. He considers it a great privilege to walk with people as they learn, grow, and deepen their relationship with the Lord. It is a holy, sacred, and joyful journey! Bill grew up in Virginia Beach, VA, as the eldest son of a naval commander and church pianist. His favorite memories of childhood and adolescence likely have something to do with playing soccer or rebuilding a ‘75 Camaro with his dad. He grew up dreaming of becoming a fighter pilot or racecar driver, yet God had other plans, though no less thrilling! Bill attended Virginia Tech, where he studied economics, business, and communication. At the Wesley Foundation of Virginia Tech, Bill met his wife Jenny and received his call to ministry. Upon graduation, Bill and Jenny were married and began their life together on the campus of Eastern Mennonite Seminary in Harrisonburg, VA, where Bill graduated with his Master of Divinity in 2000. Bill and Jenny have been married for 28 years and have loved raising their three children together: Billy (26), Hannah (23), and Owen (15). Billy is an engineer in Richmond, VA. Hannah is a Senior Airman in the US Air Force and is stationed in Minot, ND. Owen is a high school freshman, and his greatest love is soccer. Jenny is a licensed counselor, assistant professor of counseling, and director of the counseling program at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, MA. They enjoy camping, board games, sports, and movies as a family. In his free time, Bill enjoys coaching soccer, woodworking, and restoring (and driving) his ‘85 Camaro. Bill and Jenny look forward to growing in ministry and fellowship alongside the people of Aldersgate UMC and the community of Fort Hunt. God is up to something, and it is always good!
